The original Alabama Shakespeare Festival was housed in an unairconditioned high school auditorium in Anniston, Alabama. It was a summer only program with productions running for six weeks. Facing bankruptcy, the organization was left with a dilemma. Instead of losing a valuable state resource they decided to move the Festival to Montgomery. Now it is a multi-million dollar complex resting on 250 acres with over 100,000 square feet of indoor space. Currently the Festival schedules more than 400 performances a year.
The Festival found its current location in 1985 when Mr. Wynton Blount, husband to one of the original Alabama Shakespeare Festival board members, gifted the $21.5 million complex to the state, making it the largest single contribution in the history of American theatre.
