Alabama Shakespeare Festival
As the sixth largest Shakespeare Festival in the world, the Alabama Shakespeare Festival features world-class contemporary and classic performances year round as well as educational seminars. As an internationally acclaimed theatre, it is the only American theatre invited to fly the flag of England’s Royal Shakespeare Company. The Staybridge Suites Montgomery EastChase hotel offers the ideal location and all-suite hotel accommodations for visitors of the ASF.
The original Alabama Shakespeare Festival was housed in an unairconditioned high school auditorium in Anniston, Alabama. It was a summer only program with productions running for six weeks. The festival was moved to Montgomery and is now a multi-million dollar complex resting on 250 acres with over 100,000 square feet of indoor space. Currently the Festival schedules more than 400 performances a year.
The Festival found its current location in 1985 when Mr. Wynton Blount, husband to one of the original Alabama Shakespeare Festival board members, gifted the $21.5 million complex to the state, making it the largest single contribution in the history of American theatre.
